Here's something we run into more than you'd think - a homeowner buys a high-rated filter thinking they're doing their system a favor. MERV 14, MERV 13, sometimes even higher. It sounds better on paper. More filtration, cleaner air, right? Not exactly.

The problem is that most residential HVAC systems were never designed to handle that kind of restriction. When the filter is too dense, air can't move through freely. The system strains, the evaporator coil gets too cold, and eventually it freezes up. What started as a good intention ends in a repair call.

We swapped out a MERV 14 for the right filter and the system ran perfectly afterward. That's not a coincidence. Most homes are built for MERV 8 or lower - that's the sweet spot where you still get decent filtration without choking the airflow your system depends on.

The other piece people miss is the replacement schedule. Even a MERV 8 filter becomes a restriction problem once it's clogged. Change it every 30 days. It's a small habit that lowers your energy bill, extends the life of your equipment, and keeps you out of emergency repair territory.

If your system has been short-cycling, freezing up, or running harder than it used to - your filter rating might be the first place to look. Sometimes the fix is simpler than you'd expect.
